The Seabin

Pete from Seabin Project - Pretty excitable!

Imagine a bin that sits just below the surface of the water quietly skimming rubbish and contaminants from harbours and waterways before they reach the open ocean. That's the idea that lead Pete Ceglinski to invent and develop the Seabin Project. There are now over 800 Seabins in waterways across the globe including a state-funded pilot project underway in Sydney Harbour.

This morning Pete and the team from Seabin Project will be launching Manly's first Seabin at the Manly Yacht Club. It's expected that the Manly Seabin will collect 1.4tons of rubbish every year as well as oil, and detergents floating on the surface. Imagine if we had 20 of theses under harbours and jetty in all the nocks and crannies around Manly!

This morning I jumping in the water with the crew from Seabin for a quick pre-launch sample of our corner of the ocean. There wasn't a heap to get excited about, except the prospect of a cleaner ocean for all! Get involved if you can!
