Aggy's Corner
On a humble street in Balgowlah, in an old corner store, the simple pleasures of coffee and food are served daily to a loyal and local crowd at Aggy’s Corner. Tom Lane, one half of the Aggy’s founding crew, makes an epic cup of coffee and surfs a twin fin as good as anyone on The Beaches. If you haven’t already, it’s high time you went in search of the refined simplicity that’s a signature of Aggy’s offering; from the food to the decor. I caught up with Tom to see how things were going…

MF - Tell us about Aggy’s Corner, where is it, how did it come to be?
TL - Aggy’s Corner was something that came from nothing. I was working for a mate in his painting company driving through Balgowlah and came across an empty block. At the time I was listening to a podcast called the 5 second rule and it was a motivation book pretty much making you move on a thought. So, I jumped at the opportunity and came up with Aggy’s Corner,
It was a partnership between myself and my brother in law; me in there full time and him helping with the build. I never had the thought of opening a shop but it just was the right place at the right time!
Who are your customers and how do you serve them?
Our customers are the local community and their beautiful little families. Friends and the tradies flying over the spit bridge in the mornings. We serve them with a damn good smile and a nice tasty coffee.
If there was one product that someone needed to try at Aggy’s, what would it be and why’s is so special?
Our goal has been to do the simple things well, so I reckon everything! Come in and taste our simple yet thought out goodies!
Now that we’re in this semi-shutdown situations, has there been any surprises (good or bad) that you’ve discovered in this upheaval?
We have had to re do our model and get creative, our surprise was how lucky we are to have the community support. Being an area with no foot traffic we rely on our regulars and they have just been amazing
Tell us how you’ve adapted or innovated so you can continue to serve your customers/community while we’re all in shutdown?
We have dialled our menu to just local picked goodies and coffee.
What’s been resonating with customers so far and how are people continuing to support Aggy’s Corner?
Our staff are definitely warming and our customers have all become very friendly and warm with all of our staff. I think just a friendly face and a cheeky smile on the one outing people have a day says a lot.
With everything going on it feels like we're in uncertain and unprecedented times, what are positives you think we can emerge with?
Time and space. Something we all don’t take or remember. Take a few breaths check in on yourself and your loved ones.
